Weezer – Pork & Beans

Weezer are a little late to the viral music video party, but damn did they go all in.

I’m reserving judgment on the song for a little while, but so far i like it better than about 90% of Make Believe, hopefully the upcoming (red?) album will be more to my taste.

Recent (Electronic) Reading.

*I picked up AIDS Doctors: Voices from the Epidemic after it was mentioned in this article. it’s a fascinating and educational read. The first hand accounts of the early years from the people on the front lines is eye-opening and sobering.

Kindle

Justin Blanton has a nice hands on review of the Amazon Kindle e-book reader, of which he seems quite fond.

“I love the Kindle, and totally see myself using and enjoying it (and its progeny) for many years to come. I’m reading more because of it, and seriously doubt I’ll ever read a paper book again.”

-

“You could obviously argue that I could read books without the Kindle, and you’d be right. Partially. Sure, I can go out and pick up a book (and I’ve certainly done that over the last decade, though probably only a handful of times a year), but these books are missing what I’ve come to really appreciate and enjoy about reading online — the ability to [re]search and easily switch between sources. The Kindle fills these gaps.”

Like Justin, upon first look I was rather dubious of the Kindle and it’s, uh…functional design. But I must admit I’m eager to see e-ink in action first hand – It’s one of those technologies that in a few revisions could really change things.

DOD Updates Afoot

Lest we think Valve are done with DOD:

A new update adding support for Steamworks is currently available in beta for Day of Defeat: Source, the popular World War II online action game from Valve, creators of the Half-Life and Counter-Strike games.
Leveraging the recently released free set of services available in Steamworks, the Day of Defeat update will add 51 achievements for DoD, player avatar display in the scoreboard and win panel, and detailed player statistics integrated with the Steam Community features (www.steamcommunity.com).

This update also adds support for popular features introduced in Valve’s Team Fortress 2 (TF2), the PC title named multiplayer game of the year by Gamespy.com and PC Gamer. These include “nemesis/revenge” freeze cam and new effects driven by the particle system introduced to the Source engine for TF2.

In addition, this update will also introduce a new map, dod_Palermo, which is a remix of the most popular community map, dod_salerno.

Owners of Day of Defeat: Source, retail and Steam versions, may join the beta free of charge.

Kasparov vs. Flying…Penis?

That aide/bodyguard must be highly trained in flying-penis counter measures with those moves.

At least the photo-journalist was suitably amused.

Sulu’s Getting Married

From Takei’s website:

Our California dream is reality. Brad Altman and I can now marry. We are overjoyed! At long last, the barrier to full marriage rights for same-sex couples has been torn down. We are equal with all citizens of our state!

The California Supreme Court further ruled that our Constitution provides for equal protection for all and that it cannot have marriage for one group and another form – domestic partnership – for another group. No more “separate but equal.” No more second-class citizenship. Brad and I are going to be married as full citizens of our state.
