Steam Cloud

Next-Gen has some great info from a recent Valve press event – a lot of interesting stuff, notably:

But perhaps the most compelling new feature, as far as convenience is concerned, will be the upcoming ability for users to access not only their Steam games from any PC (which they can do already), but also game-generated data such as saves and configurations, which will be stored transparently in Steam’s back-end. This feature, dubbed Steam Cloud, will first be rolled out in existing titles, and will be available for free to both developers and gamers.

Being a southpaw I find the WASD layout that is so in vogue these days rather uncomfortable, thus every time I sit down at another PC or format my own I have to go in and remap most of the common keys in all my games. What would be even better is if Steam games shared a set of “global” key settings – Movement, jump, crouch etc. – that I could set in Steam, and then I’d only have to rebind the keys unique to certain games.

DOD Updates Afoot

Lest we think Valve are done with DOD:

A new update adding support for Steamworks is currently available in beta for Day of Defeat: Source, the popular World War II online action game from Valve, creators of the Half-Life and Counter-Strike games.
Leveraging the recently released free set of services available in Steamworks, the Day of Defeat update will add 51 achievements for DoD, player avatar display in the scoreboard and win panel, and detailed player statistics integrated with the Steam Community features (www.steamcommunity.com).

This update also adds support for popular features introduced in Valve’s Team Fortress 2 (TF2), the PC title named multiplayer game of the year by Gamespy.com and PC Gamer. These include “nemesis/revenge” freeze cam and new effects driven by the particle system introduced to the Source engine for TF2.

In addition, this update will also introduce a new map, dod_Palermo, which is a remix of the most popular community map, dod_salerno.

Owners of Day of Defeat: Source, retail and Steam versions, may join the beta free of charge.
